Not every hotel in China accepts foreign guests. Hotels must be licensed (涉外) and have a PSB-linked registration system to scan your passport. Use Trip.com — not Booking.com — to find verified foreigner-friendly hotels. If you're staying in an Airbnb or private apartment, you must visit the nearest police station within 24 hours to register yourself under Article 39 of the Exit-Entry Administration Law.

Trip.com
-
立即打开Trip.com。
Airbnb
- Airbnb
Book on Trip.com (not Booking.com/Agoda/Expedia) — it's the only platform with reliable foreigner-eligibility filtering
Look for 'Accepts Foreign Guests' badge or '涉外' in hotel descriptions before paying
Message the hotel before arrival: confirm they can register foreign guests with the local PSB
At check-in: present your passport with visa and entry stamp — the hotel scans and auto-registers you with police
If staying at Airbnb/private accommodation: visit the nearest 派出所 (police station) with your passport, booking confirmation, host address, and a passport photo within 24 hours of arrival
If rejected at the front desk: open Trip.com, find the nearest international chain (Marriott/Hilton/Holiday Inn), book instantly — don't wander the street
Booking on Booking.com and trusting it — their foreigner-acceptance metadata is patchy and unreliable for Chinese hotels
Assuming all hotels accept foreigners — hotels need a PSB-linked registration system; budget chains often don't have it
Not messaging the hotel before arrival — 30 seconds of messaging prevents a 2-hour nightmare at the front desk
Staying at an Airbnb and skipping police registration — the fine is real (¥500-2,000) and can affect your exit
Arriving in a new city without a backup hotel — save one international chain address per city before your trip
Panicking when rejected and wandering the street at midnight — open Trip.com, book the nearest Marriott/Hilton/Holiday Inn, they'll take you
Can I be rejected if I have a valid Chinese visa?
Yes. Having a valid visa doesn't guarantee hotel acceptance. The issue is the hotel's registration system capability (whether they have the PSB-linked scanner), not your visa status. Some hotels simply don't have the license to host foreigners.
What if my Airbnb host says I don't need to register?
They're wrong. The law applies to YOU, the foreigner, not the host. If your host tells you to skip registration, go to the police station anyway. You will get fined — not the host.
What happens if I don't register within 24 hours?
Fines range from ¥500-2,000 (~$70-$280). In rare cases, failure to register can cause problems when exiting the country or applying for future Chinese visas. It's not worth the risk.
I was rejected at 11pm. What now?
Open Trip.com → filter by foreigner-friendly → sort by distance → book the nearest international chain (Marriott/Hilton/Holiday Inn). You'll pay more than planned, but you'll have a bed. Don't wander the street cold-calling hotels — it won't work without Chinese language skills.
Do hotels register me with the police automatically?
Yes — licensed hotels scan your passport, visa, and entry stamp at check-in. The registration is transmitted to the PSB electronically. You don't need to visit a police station if you're staying in a hotel.
Can I be rejected if I have a Chinese visa?
Yes. Having a valid visa doesn't guarantee hotel acceptance. The issue is the hotel's registration capability, not your visa status.
Which hotel chains always accept foreigners?
International brands: Marriott, Hilton, IHG (Holiday Inn), Hyatt, Accor. Chinese mid-range: Atour (亚朵), JI Hotel (全季), James Joyce Coffetel (喆啡). Budget: avoid Hanting and 7 Days Inn unless specifically confirmed.
