Save the hotel's Chinese name, address, and phone number offline — Screenshot and print the booking confirmation in Chinese characters before departure. This is your lifeline if your phone dies or VPN disconnects.
Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay before departure — Complete passport verification in the app (this is the step most people miss). TourPass is the lowest-friction option: no Chinese bank needed, first ¥200/month fee-free.
Carry ¥1,500–2,000 RMB in cash — For hotel deposits at non-chain properties where international credit cards may not work. Cash deposits are returned immediately at checkout.

What happens if I book through Trip.com but the hotel turns me away?
Trip.com's guarantee covers this. Call their 24/7 English hotline. They will either force the hotel to accept you (by calling and explaining the regulation) or rebook you into a nearby equivalent hotel at no extra cost, plus refund your original booking.
Can I check in with just a photocopy of my passport?
No. Hotels must scan the physical passport's machine-readable zone. A photocopy, photo, or digital image will not work. If your passport is lost, contact your embassy immediately — you cannot check into any hotel without the original document.
I'm staying at an Airbnb. What's the registration process?
You or your host must register with the local PSB within 24 hours. Since March 2026, an online portal exists but the in-person visit is more reliable. Ask your host to handle it. If they refuse, stay at a hotel instead.
Do I need a Chinese phone number to check in?

Can two people share a room if the booking is only under one name?
