China's 240-hour Transit Without Visa (TWOV) is right for you if: (1) your passport is from one of the 55 eligible countries, (2) your route is Country A → China → Country C (three different countries/regions), (3) you enter and exit through designated TWOV ports, and (4) your stay is 10 days or fewer. It's NOT right for you if you're doing a round-trip from the same country, staying longer than 10 days, or need to travel between provinces outside your port's authorized cluster. If your nationality also qualifies for the 30-day visa-free entry, compare both: the 30-day option gives more flexibility with no transit requirement and fewer area restrictions.

Travelers planning a multi-country trip who want to add China as a 10-day or shorter stopover. Also travelers deciding between the 240-hour TWOV, 30-day visa-free entry, or a formal L visa. This article helps you evaluate eligibility and fit — it is not a step-by-step how-to for using TWOV (see the TWOV guide for that).

  1. Step 1 — Check your nationality against the 55-country eligibility list. If your country also has 30-day visa-free entry, note both options for comparison.

  2. Step 2 — Verify your route: Country A → China → Country/Region C, where A ≠ C. Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan count as separate third regions.

  3. Step 3 — Confirm your arrival and departure ports are on the 65-designated TWOV list. Major international airports are included; smaller regional airports may not be.

  4. Step 4 — Count your stay: arrival day = Day 0, next day = Day 1. Your departure must be by 23:59 on Day 10. Late-night arrivals effectively get one extra calendar day.

  5. Step 5 — Check port-specific travel area restrictions. Some ports restrict you to the surrounding province only; inter-province travel requires specific port authorizations.

  6. Step 6 — Compare TWOV against alternatives: 30-day visa-free entry (if eligible — longer stay, no transit requirement), formal L visa (for stays >10 days or unrestricted travel), or 24-hour TWOV (for very short layovers).

  7. Step 7 — Book confirmed onward travel to Country C and hotel accommodation before departure. Immigration requires both at the port of entry.

  • Saying 'transit visa' at airline check-in — airline staff look for a physical visa sticker. Use 'Transit Without Visa — 240 hours' instead. This single word has caused travelers to be denied boarding.

  • Booking a round-trip from the same country (London→Shanghai→London) — TWOV requires three different countries/regions in your route.

  • Assuming any Chinese airport accepts TWOV — only 65 ports are designated. Smaller cities like Guilin or Lijiang may not be on the list.

  • Counting 240 hours from landing time instead of calendar days — the clock starts at 00:00 on the day after arrival, giving you 10 full calendar days.

  • Underestimating port-specific province restrictions — entering through Shanghai does not authorize travel to Chengdu or Xi'an. Each port has a defined travel area.

  • Not having a confirmed onward ticket at immigration — immigration officers require it at the port of entry. A 'book later' plan gets you denied entry.

  • Not checking if the 30-day visa-free entry is available to you first — if eligible, it offers 3× the time with no route or province restrictions.

  • Expecting to pay a 'transit visa fee' — the TWOV is completely free. Anyone asking for payment at the airport is running a scam.

The 55-country eligibility list can change (Indonesia was added June 2025). The 65-port list expands periodically. Port-specific province travel restrictions vary and are not published in a single public-facing document. Airline staff familiarity with TWOV varies significantly — major carriers on popular China routes know it well, but smaller regional airlines may require you to explain the policy. Immigration officer discretion applies at smaller ports where international arrivals are less common. The 24-hour TWOV multi-stop rule may have changed based on recent traveler reports — verify with your airline. Verify all high-sensitivity details with the NIA website before booking.

  1. Use the 30-day visa-free entry if your nationality qualifies (no transit requirement, longer stay). 2) Adjust your route by adding a third-country destination — budget flights to Hong Kong, Seoul, or Bangkok satisfy the third-country rule. 3) Apply for a formal L tourist visa at your nearest Chinese embassy (4-7 business days, ~$30-$140). 4) Use the 24-hour TWOV for very short stopovers only. 5) Restructure your trip or postpone the China leg until you have the right visa.

Can I use the 240-hour TWOV if my country also has 30-day visa-free entry?

Yes, you have both options. Choose based on your trip: if you're doing a multi-country itinerary with ≤10 days in China, TWOV is often simpler. If China is your main destination or you want more flexibility, the 30-day visa-free entry is usually better.

Does Hong Kong really count as a third country for TWOV?

Yes. Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan are treated as separate immigration regions. A route like Singapore → Shenzhen → Hong Kong fully qualifies. This has been confirmed by multiple travelers on Reddit r/Chinavisa in 2025-2026.

What if my flight has a layover in a third country — does that count?

Only if you have separate tickets and actually enter that country. A single ticket New York → Shanghai with a 2-hour airside layover in Tokyo does NOT qualify because your true origin remains New York. Book Tokyo as a separate stop with an overnight stay for it to count.

Can I book my onward ticket after arriving in China?

No — immigration officers require a confirmed onward ticket at the port of entry. Without one, you may be denied entry and sent back on the next flight. Book your departure before you travel.

What if I want to stay 12 days instead of 10?

The TWOV is not extendable for tourism purposes. Emergency extensions (medical, natural disaster, canceled flights) are possible through the local immigration office, but 'I want to explore more' will be denied. Either shorten your trip, use a 30-day visa-free entry, or apply for an L visa.

Can I use TWOV multiple times in one year?

Yes, there is no limit on frequency. Some business travelers use TWOV repeatedly. However, frequent back-to-back entries may attract additional questioning from immigration officers. Keep your documents well-organized.

I'm arriving by train from Hong Kong — can I use TWOV?

Yes, if the rail port is on the designated TWOV list. The West Kowloon high-speed rail station is a TWOV port. Cross-border trains from Vietnam and Laos may also qualify. Verify the specific port is designated before booking.
