Foshan Kung Fu Night Market: Canton Fair Buyers' After-Dark China Travel Pick | China Travel

Foshan's kung fu night market — rated one of China's Top Ten Night Markets — drew 80,000 visitors on its Phase 2 launch night in April, including Canton Fair buyers. With Phase 3 opening Oct 31 and APEC Shenzhen on Nov 14, here's the after-dark guide buyers are using.

Canton Fair Phase 3 opens in Guangzhou on Oct 31 — and after the aisles close, a growing number of buyers are taking a metro ride to a night market built around kung fu, fire-spitting squid skewers and lion dances.

Foshan's kung fu night market — the flagship project of Foshan Creative Industry Park, rated one of China's "Top Ten Night Markets" by the China Tourism Academy — opened its Phase 2 food street on April 30, 2026, and drew 80,000 visitors on launch night alone. Indian and Russian buyers attending the Canton Fair were among the first foreigners to wander through.

"This is really cool. I've never been to a place like this before — it's amazing," Indian buyer Avina said after an evening of street food and crowds.

A night market built on kung fu

Foshan is the ancestral home of southern Chinese martial arts — the city behind Wing Chun and Hung Gar — so the market's theme isn't decoration. The launch night opened with six big drums, lion-dance eye-dotting ceremonies and kung fu performers working the crowd between stalls. During the May Day week, the park ran over 180 events: lion dances, shadow-puppet shows, harp solos, jazz sets, an electronic music festival and hanfu fashion walks.

Two streets, roughly 500 stalls

The market splits into two food streets. The new China Snack Street opened with 130 stalls serving regional dishes from across the country: Xinjiang lamb skewers, northeastern grilled beef, Wuhan hot dry noodles, Yunnan fried scorpions and Taiwanese shaved-ice desserts. The renovated Lingnan Snack Street organizes stalls by region — Chaoshan, Guangdong, Guangxi and a seafood plaza — so a single evening walks you through several provincial cuisines.

Dinner and a show

The stalls themselves put on a performance. A vendor nicknamed "Squid Master" — 1.5 million followers, with TV appearances on CCTV — flips dozens of skewers over an open iron plate while dancing, occasionally sending a burst of flame up from the grill. Nearby, a screenwriter-director runs a stall, and a million-follower influencer sells snacks alongside two-decade veterans. It's the kind of place where the queue is part of the experience.

Clean enough to feed your own kids

Foshan market management built the food-safety pitch into the concept: ingredient traceability, a unified supply chain and third-party testing, plus taste-testing by park executives before anything opens. Stall owners are asked to sell food they'd feed their own families — during the launch, a vendor's 10-year-old son was eating grilled gluten skewers at his mother's stall.

Getting there from the fair

The market sits in Foshan Creative Industry Park, at Jihua Fourth Road in Chancheng District. From the Canton Fair complex at Pazhou, the Guangzhou–Foshan metro networks are directly connected, so no airport-style transfer is needed. On busy fair evenings, buyers typically head over after the 6 pm close.

If you go

  • Go late — the market peaks after 7 pm, when the fair crowd arrives.
  • Bring a cashless wallet. Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay before you go; stall payments are all phone-based.
  • Eat across both streets: hit the China Snack Street for the country's greatest hits, then walk the Lingnan street for Guangdong seafood.
  • Watch for the fire — the squid grills and lion dances are the evening's main event.
  • Pair it with the region. Foshan is also home to ancestral halls and Cantonese heritage neighborhoods that make a half-day add-on before you return to Guangzhou.

Canton Fair Phase 3 runs Oct 31 – Nov 4 at Pazhou. After that, APEC Shenzhen opens on Nov 14 — turning South China's business season into a two-city story.
