What is the best time of year to visit China?

Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–early November) are ideal — mild temperatures, clear skies, and comfortable for sightseeing. Summer (Jun–Aug) is hot and rainy but has the longest days. Winter (Dec–Feb) is cold but cheapest and least crowded. AVOID Chinese New Year (Jan/Feb, 7-day holiday) and National Day (Oct 1–7) — attractions are packed, prices surge 2–3x, transport sells out weeks ahead.

Quick answer

Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–early November) are ideal — mild temperatures, clear skies, and comfortable for sightseeing. Summer (Jun–Aug) is hot and rainy but has the longest days. Winter (Dec–Feb) is cold but cheapest and least crowded. AVOID Chinese New Year (Jan/Feb, 7-day holiday) and National Day (Oct 1–7) — attractions are packed, prices surge 2–3x, transport sells out weeks ahead.

Season-by-Season Breakdown

Spring (Mar–May): BEST overall. Cherry blossoms in March (Wuhan University, Yuyuantan Beijing), warm April, comfortable May. Temperatures 10–25°C. Rain increases in May in southern China.

Summer (Jun–Aug): Hot and humid (25–38°C), with heavy rain June–July (plum rain season in Yangtze region). Summer vacation means families at major attractions. Good for northern China (Beijing, Xi'an) and mountains (Huangshan, Jiuzhaigou).

Autumn (Sep–Nov): TIE for best. September is warm and dry, October has National Day crowds (avoid Oct 1–7), November is crisp and beautiful. Best for Great Wall, Forbidden City, Li River, Jiuzhaigou (fall colors in Oct).

Winter (Dec–Feb): Cold (Beijing -5 to 5°C, Shanghai 0–10°C, Guangzhou 10–20°C). Cheapest flights and hotels, fewest crowds. Great for Harbin Ice Festival (Jan), skiing, and indoor attractions. Chinese New Year (late Jan/early Feb) is a major exception — avoid.

Major Chinese Holidays to Avoid

Chinese New Year (Spring Festival): 7-day holiday, late Jan–mid Feb. The world's largest human migration — 3+ billion trips. Trains/flights sell out weeks ahead, attractions are packed, many small businesses close for 1–2 weeks. Prices surge 2–3x.

National Day (Golden Week): Oct 1–7. 700+ million people travel. Every major attraction is at capacity. Hotels and flights cost 2–3x normal. Book 2+ months ahead if you must travel then.

Labor Day: May 1–5 (5 days since 2020). Similar crowds but shorter. Domestic travel peak.

Qingming Festival: Early April (3 days). Cemetery visits + short trips. Some attractions busy but manageable.

Mid-Autumn Festival: Late Sep–early Oct (3 days). Family gatherings, mooncakes. Less travel impact than Golden Week.

Dragon Boat Festival: June (3 days). Some domestic travel, river dragon boat races are worth seeing.
