Airport SIM Counters — Locations & Process

Where to find: After passing through customs and baggage claim, look for 'China Mobile' (中国移动), 'China Unicom' (中国联通), or 'China Telecom' (中国电信) counters in the arrivals hall. Usually near the exit or transportation center.

Major airports with counters: Beijing Capital (PEK) T2/T3, Beijing Daxing (PKX), Shanghai Pudong (PVG) T1/T2, Shanghai Hongqiao (SHA), Guangzhou Baiyun (CAN) T1/T2, Shenzhen Bao'an (SZX), Chengdu Tianfu (TFU), Xi'an Xianyang (XIY), Hangzhou Xiaoshan (HGH), Chongqing Jiangbei (CKG).

Process: 1) Go to counter with passport. 2) Choose a plan. 3) Staff scans your passport and takes your photo (real-name registration — legal requirement). 4) Pay (cash, Alipay, WeChat, or sometimes foreign card). 5) Staff inserts SIM into your phone and activates it. 6) Done — you have data + Chinese phone number.

Time: 15–30 minutes depending on queue. Arriving at peak hours (many international flights) may mean longer waits. Some counters close late at night (after 11pm) — check hours if arriving late.

English: Staff at major airport counters usually speak basic English. They have printed plan brochures in English. If communication is difficult, use Google Translate (but you may not have internet yet — download offline translation before arrival).

Smaller airports: Some smaller international airports (Kunming, Xiamen, Qingdao) may have limited or no SIM counters. If arriving at a small airport, buy eSIM in advance or purchase in the city.

Tourist SIM Plans & Pricing

China Mobile: Largest network, best coverage. Tourist plans: ¥30 (7 days, 5GB), ¥50 (15 days, 10GB), ¥80 (30 days, 20GB). Includes some domestic call minutes. Data speed 4G/5G.

China Unicom: Good in cities, slightly less rural coverage. Tourist plans: ¥25 (7 days, 5GB), ¥45 (15 days, 12GB), ¥70 (30 days, 25GB). Often has better English support at airports.

China Telecom: Good 5G coverage in major cities. Tourist plans: ¥30 (7 days, 6GB), ¥55 (15 days, 15GB), ¥75 (30 days, 20GB).

All plans include: Data (4G/5G), domestic calls (some minutes), SMS (some). No international roaming included (you can't use this SIM outside China).

Top-up: If you run out of data, top up via Alipay (search '手机充值'), WeChat, or at any convenience store. ¥10–50 increments. The SIM expires after the plan period — you can renew or discard it.

Recommendation: For most tourists, China Unicom's ¥45/15-day plan or China Mobile's ¥50/15-day plan is sufficient. If you're a heavy data user (streaming, video calls), get the 20GB+ plan.

Important: The phone number you get (+86) can be used for WeChat, Didi, and other app registrations. This is the main advantage over eSIM (which is data-only).

eSIM vs Airport SIM — Which to Choose

Choose eSIM if: You have an eSIM-compatible phone, want instant connectivity on landing, don't need a Chinese phone number, value convenience over cost. Buy online before arrival (Airalo, Nomad, Holafly). ¥60–200 for 7–15 days.

Choose airport SIM if: You need a Chinese phone number for app verification (WeChat, Didi, Alipay bank linking), you're staying >30 days, you want the cheapest data rates, or your phone doesn't support eSIM. ¥30–80 for 7–30 days.

Best combo: eSIM for data (primary) + keep your home SIM active for SMS/calls (roaming). This gives you cheap data AND the ability to receive verification codes from your home bank/services. You don't need a Chinese number for most apps — foreign numbers work for Alipay, Didi, WeChat.

When you MUST have a Chinese number: Registering for some Chinese bank accounts, certain delivery apps (Meituan Waimai), some government services, and receiving SMS from Chinese businesses. For pure tourism, a foreign number works for 95% of apps.

Time cost: eSIM = 5 minutes online before trip. Airport SIM = 15–30 min after landing (possibly after a long flight). If you're tired and just want to get to your hotel, eSIM is much better.

Recommendation: 90% of travelers should use eSIM. Only get an airport SIM if you specifically need a Chinese phone number or are staying long-term.
