Before You Start
You will need: an eSIM-compatible phone, a credit/debit card for purchase, WiFi access (for installation), and your passport (some providers may ask for ID).
Do this BEFORE you fly — install the eSIM at home with WiFi, but do NOT activate data roaming until you land in China. Activation starts your data plan clock.
Keep your home SIM active for calls and SMS. You'll use the eSIM only for data. Turn off data roaming on your home SIM to avoid surprise charges.

Follow these exact steps to get your China eSIM working.
- Check if your phone supports eSIM
Most phones from 2019+ support eSIM. iPhone: Open Settings → General → About → scroll to 'Available SIM' or 'Digital SIM' — if you see 'eSIM' listed, you're compatible. Android: Settings → Network & Internet → look for 'eSIM' or 'Download a SIM instead' option. If unsure, search your phone model + 'eSIM' online.
Warning: US-carrier-locked phones (some Verizon/Sprint iPhones, Samsung US variants) may have eSIM disabled. If you bought your phone through a US carrier, check with them before buying an eSIM. Unlocked phones from Apple Store/Google Store always support eSIM.
- Purchase your China eSIM
Choose a provider (see our comparison guide for details). We recommend Airalo for most travelers (best value, English support). Go to the provider's website or app, select 'China' as destination, choose your plan (7-day, 15-day, 30-day; data amount 5GB–unlimited), enter your email, and pay with credit card. You'll receive a confirmation email with a QR code and activation instructions.
Tip: Buy 20–30% more data than you think you need. Maps, translation, and video calls consume more than expected. You can top up most eSIMs if you run out, but it's easier to have enough from the start.
- Save the QR code to your phone
Open the confirmation email on your phone. Screenshot the QR code (press power + volume up on iPhone, power + volume down on Android). Save it to your photos/album. You'll need to scan it during installation — if you're viewing the email on the same phone, you can't scan it with the camera. Having it saved means you can select it from photos during installation.
Tip: Also email the QR code to yourself or save it to cloud storage (Google Drive, iCloud) as backup. If you lose the screenshot, you can always re-download from the provider's website by logging into your account.
- Install eSIM on iPhone
Open Settings → Cellular (or 'Mobile Data') → tap 'Add eSIM' (or 'Add Cellular Plan') → tap 'Use QR Code' → point your camera at the QR code screenshot (or select it from photos by tapping 'Photos' icon) → wait for 'Activating eSIM' → when prompted, label it 'China Data' → tap 'Continue'. The eSIM is now installed but NOT active.
Warning: Do NOT tap 'Activate' or turn on 'Data Roaming' for this eSIM yet. Installing is free and doesn't start your plan. Only activate when you land in China. If you accidentally activate early, contact the provider — some can pause the plan.
- Install eSIM on Android
Open Settings → Network & Internet → tap '+' next to SIMs → tap 'Download a SIM instead' (or 'Add eSIM') → tap 'Next' → point camera at QR code (or select from photos) → wait for download → when prompted, label it 'China Data' → tap 'Done'. The eSIM is installed but not active.
Tip: Android menus vary by manufacturer (Samsung, Google, Xiaomi). If you can't find 'Add eSIM', search for 'eSIM' in Settings search bar. Samsung: Settings → Connections → SIM manager → Add eSIM. Google Pixel: Settings → Network & Internet → + → Download a SIM.
- Set up dual SIM (keep home number)
After installing the eSIM, go to Cellular/Mobile settings. You'll see two lines: your primary (home SIM) and 'China Data' (eSIM). Set 'Default Data Line' (默认数据线路) to 'China Data'. Set 'Default Voice Line' to your primary/home SIM. Turn OFF 'Data Roaming' on your primary/home SIM (this prevents your home carrier from charging you for data in China). Leave the eSIM's data roaming OFF for now — you'll turn it on when you land.
Tip: You can receive SMS on your home SIM without data roaming — SMS doesn't use data. This is important for bank verification codes during Alipay setup. Keep your home SIM active and roaming enabled for calls/SMS (just not data).
- Activate on landing in China
After landing and turning off airplane mode: Open Settings → Cellular → tap 'China Data' eSIM line → turn ON 'Data Roaming' (数据漫游). Wait 2–5 minutes for the eSIM to connect to the local network (you'll see signal bars and '4G' or '5G'). Test by opening baidu.com (loads fast on local networks) or amap.com. If no signal after 5 minutes, toggle airplane mode on/off, or restart your phone.
Warning: Make sure you're turning on data roaming for the eSIM line ('China Data'), NOT your home SIM. If you turn on data roaming on your home SIM, you'll get charged $10–15/day by your home carrier. Double-check which line you're editing.
Common Problems & Fixes
No signal after activation: Toggle airplane mode on/off, wait 2 minutes. If still no signal, restart phone. Ensure data roaming is ON for the eSIM line. Check that your plan covers China (some 'Asia' plans may exclude China).
QR code won't scan: Ensure the QR code is clear and not cropped. Zoom in on the screenshot. Try increasing screen brightness. If still fails, manually enter the activation code (SM-DP+ address and activation code) provided in the email.
eSIM says 'Activation failed': Check you have WiFi during installation. Ensure you entered the correct QR code. Delete the failed eSIM (Settings → Cellular → tap eSIM → Remove eSIM) and reinstall from the QR code.
Data is very slow: You may be on a 2G/3G network in rural areas. Check network mode (Settings → Cellular → eSIM → Network Mode → select '5G/4G Auto'). Some eSIMs throttle after high data usage.
Can't make calls: eSIMs are data-only — you cannot make regular phone calls with them. Use your home SIM for calls (with roaming enabled) or use internet calling (WeChat, WhatsApp, FaceTime) over the eSIM data.
