Chinamaxxing, now with mud on your shoes
For the past two years the hashtag #Chinamaxxing has sent travelers into Chinese parks for morning tai chi, into teahouses for gongfu brewing, and onto night markets for skewers. This November it has found a new setting: a rice paddy.
At the Longji Rice Terraces near Guilin in south China's Guangxi, this year's harvest season has turned into an open-air experience floor. Foreign tourists are rolling up their sleeves and joining the farming — and the photos coming out of the terraces look nothing like a standard sightseeing itinerary.
What actually happened in Ping'an Village
On November 1, travelers at Ping'an Village — one of the three main Longji settlements — spent the day inside the harvest itself. Xinhua's photographer Cao Yiming captured the scenes: a backpacker leaping between bamboo sticks in a traditional bamboo-stick dance, with Zhuang villagers clapping the rhythm; a tourist with a shoulder pole carrying two bundles of freshly cut rice across the golden terraces; another traveler, camera still around the neck, bending over a crop with a sickle.
The day ended with a drink: a visitor tasting a cup of locally brewed sweet liquor handed over by a villager in traditional dress, surrounded by wooden stilt houses and smoke rising from the valley. New arrivals in the village are learning the full arc of the harvest — cutting, bundling, carrying and threshing in a wooden threshing tub.
Why farm work became the new must-do
Three things are pulling travelers out of the scenic viewpoint and into the field.
First, the experience is real labor, not a show. Visitors who join the harvest do the same motions the villagers do — there is no roped-off demonstration area, just a field, a sickle and neighbors who will show you the grip.
Second, the setting is the payoff. Longji's terraces — centuries-old stone-walled rice steps that climb the hillside like a thousand-layer ladder — are at their best right now: the fields have turned a saturated gold, and the villages of Ping'an, Jinkeng Dazhai and Guchuang sit among them like checkpoints on a hike. The October 23-early November window is the peak viewing period.
Third, it fits the way the Chinamaxxing crowd already travels: short, local, hands-on, and cheap. A day of farming costs the price of lunch; the memory costs nothing.
How to plan your own harvest trip
- Getting there: From Guilin West or North station, direct buses run to the Longji scenic area ticket gate — about 50-65 yuan (7-9 USD) and 2.5 hours. The road is winding; first-timers should skip self-driving.
- Tickets: An adult pass costs 80 yuan (about 75 yuan bought online) and is valid for 3 days across all three villages — Ping'an, Jinkeng Dazhai and Guchuang. Students and visitors aged 60-64 pay half; children under 1.2m and seniors 65+ enter free.
- Getting around: Jinkeng's cable car runs 55 yuan one way, 100 yuan round trip, to the highest viewpoint. A shuttle within the scenic area costs 40 yuan round trip.
- Where to stay: Stilt-house guesthouses in Ping'an and Tian Tou Zhai put you above the terraces — wake up to the view, walk down into the fields.
- When to go: Harvest runs through late October into early November; check village notices, as the exact dates shift with the weather each year.
For international visitors, the 240-hour visa-free transit policy (57 countries, 65 ports) gives you up to 10 days in China — enough to pair Guilin's terraces with a river cruise down the Li River or a night in the old town.
