Full report
Fourteen days before APEC opens in Shenzhen on Nov 14, the city's night-food scene is getting a quiet upgrade: bilingual menus, an international food map covering all 21 APEC economies, and late-night kitchens run by chefs who refuse to dumb down their food.
The evening shift starts in Futian's Shuiwei village, a night-market neighborhood where stalls now post bilingual menus and a printed recommendation list tells you which dish is each shop's signature. "We always feel a bit anxious about what to order," one international visitor told CCTV in August. "Bilingual and English options make it really nice."
A food map built for 21 economies
Futian District — Shenzhen's international core — has published an English-language food map covering China's eight major cuisines plus restaurants from every APEC member economy across 18 shopping districts. More than 6,000 printed copies have been placed at Huanggang and Futian ports, the Futian high-speed rail station, the Huaqiangbei tax-refund point and top hotels. In Luohu, a bilingual "Eat Your Way Around Nanhu" guide launched Oct 25, mapping 40-plus vendors along the Shenzhen–Hong Kong Youth Avenue. In Yantian, high-end hotel dining meets beachside finds like COMO COMO, Thai Cha Tea and Melting Gelato.
Buy it at the market, eat it 50 meters away
Shekou's harbor-side wet market is the city's most hands-on dinner. You pick a live grouper, crab or mantis shrimp from a tank, a nearby kitchen cooks it for a fee of about CNY 10–20 per dish, and dinner for two — fish included — lands around CNY 150–250 (USD 22–37). The same neighborhood holds LA MAISON "Coq et Dragon," a French restaurant whose founder Sophie studied Chinese in Shenzhen, fell for the city and stayed. French residents call it "Shekou's second home." A French visitor in town on Oct 27 summed it up: "Shenzhen's foreign restaurants are rich in variety, easy to order from, and the experience is great."
15-second beef and CNY 48 late-night hotpot
Chaoshan beef hotpot is Shenzhen's other essential: fresh beef sliced to order and swished in clear bone broth for about 15 seconds — lean cuts first, then fatty ones like wotuo (five-flower tendon) and xiongguolao (brisket fat). Around Huaqiangbei, local editors' picks for late-night food run under CNY 50 a person — one Chaoshan beef shop near the electronics district serves hotpot until 3 am at about CNY 48 per person, a block from where APEC delegates will browse.
Kitchens that stay open for the homesick
Not every late night needs Chinese food. Bunco By Abidin, a Turkish restaurant in Nanshan opened in 2022 by Abidin, a chef with Michelin-star training in Turkey, preps fresh meat delivered at 5 am from Longgang and serves a room that is roughly half foreign regulars. The manager says some guests eat there 28 nights a month. Brewtown, in the OCT creative district, keeps late-night Cantonese spots open past midnight for anyone on a post-summit wander.
If you go
- WeChat Pay accepts international bank cards, so scan-to-pay works without a Chinese SIM setup.
- Self-service tax-refund machines at the airport and ports handle VAT refunds in two to three minutes.
- Bring a data plan or eSIM; maps and translation apps are how most visitors order.
- Most night markets peak after 7 pm — the APEC crowd will arrive around then.
Shenzhen's pitch to the world, in one sentence: a city where you can buy a fish from a tank, have it cooked 50 meters away, and pay for everything with a phone. That's the China travel experience APEC delegates keep posting about — and it's 14 days away.
