Xia, Shang, Zhou, Han, Sui, Tang all built their capitals here; Erlitou, a half-hour east, is the earliest palace-sized capital site in China. Read the layers in order — Erlitou archaeology, Longmen Tang sculpture, then walk Sui-Tang ruins in the city center.
White Horse Temple, founded AD 68 after a Han emperor's dream of a golden man, is the 'origin court' (释源祖庭) of Chinese Buddhism. Visit the 1,900-year-old halls before the newer Indian, Burmese and Thai-style zone — the old courtyard is the reason.
Luoyang is the Peony Capital, but that is a six-week event, not a year-round atmosphere. Come mid-April for the Peony Culture Festival and wall-to-wall flowers; come in autumn for empty grottoes and light crowds — just don't expect peonies in November.

Do Longmen as a study route: cross the bridge to the west hill (Xishan), where the cliff faces run chronologically from Northern Wei to Tang; the Vairocana Buddha niche at Fengxian Temple is the climax. Finish across the river at Xiangshan Temple and Bai Garden. Pair it the next morning with White Horse Temple — these two sites together explain why Luoyang, not Xi'an, is where Chinese Buddhism and Tang sculpture were made. Half an hour east of the city, Erlitou is the archaeological site most scholars call the capital of the late Xia or early Shang — the first time China has a palace, a grid, and a bronzeworking workshop at city scale. It is why Luoyang's history runs deeper than the Tang.
After Emperor Ming dreamed of a golden deity, envoys brought back scriptures on a white horse; White Horse Temple was built to house them. Every Chinese Buddhist school traces a lineage back here — the 'origin court' label is institutional, not marketing.
The 17 m Vairocana Buddha at Fengxian Temple was carved under Wu Zetian's court patronage in the 670s — court-scaled sculpture set into a cliff, not a temple interior. Reading the caves chronologically shows how Chinese carving absorbed Gandhara forms and became its own by the Tang.
Peonies were the imperial garden flower of Sui and Tang Luoyang; since 1983 the city has run the Peony Culture Festival every April. The bloom window is short — roughly mid-April — and the city fills with it. Visit the public gardens (Wangcheng Park) rather than private ticket gardens for a real sense.
The Luoyang water banquet (Shui Xi) serves 24 dishes, nearly all in broth, and is linked to Tang court cuisine and the city's climate. It is ceremonial — Peony Swallow Vegetable is carved to look like a peony — not everyday street food. Eat it once at an old hall, then move on to the soups.

Alipay/WeChat with a linked foreign card works at ticket gates and chain shops; carry ¥100–200 cash for soup stalls. ID matters more: Longmen Grottoes and Luoyang Museum are real-name — bring the physical passport used for booking; e-ID and face recognition are not accepted at the museum.
Peony Culture Festival (roughly April 1–May 5) fills hotels and gardens; book a month ahead. Longmen at 08:00 opening is quietest. Luoyang Museum, when open, releases free tickets on its WeChat mini-program and sells out fast — never buy 'guide includes entry' bundles from street scalpers.
Do not touch or lean on the carved cliff faces; no flash inside halls. White Horse Temple is an active monastery — shoulders covered, incense offered quietly, and ask before photographing monks or worshippers.
Longmen is walked as a one-way cliff route with real distances; wear flat shoes and water. Ignore station touts offering 'grottoes tours' — the official bus/metro and the official WeChat ticket channel are the only reliable ones.
Metro Lines 1 and 2 cover the old city: Line 1 hits Wangcheng Park, Yingtian Gate, Lijingmen and Luoyi Ancient City; winter hours run ~06:30–22:30, extended during the April festival. Longmen and White Horse Temple sit outside the metro core — budget bus or taxi each way.
Hotels and cafes have solid Wi-Fi; get a local SIM or eSIM at the airport or HSR station for continuous data. Restricted overseas services need a pre-arranged roaming solution — sort it before arrival.
