China Extends Russia Visa-Free Entry Through 2027: The Full Visa-Free Map for Travelers

China's visa-free policy for Russian passport holders has been extended through December 2027. Here's the full picture: 50 countries with unilateral visa-free entry, a 57-country 240-hour transit program, and the numbers showing why more travelers are arriving without a visa.

Key takeaway

China confirmed in early October 2026 that unilateral visa-free entry for Russian ordinary passport holders is extended through December 31, 2027. The wider map: 50 countries have unilateral visa-free entry (Brunei no expiry; Russia to end-2027; 48 others to Dec 31, 2026), and 57 countries can use 240-hour visa-free transit through 65 ports in 24 provincial regions. During the 2026 National Day week, 505,000 foreign visitors entered visa-free, up 9.2%.

Russia's Visa-Free Window Now Runs to the End of 2027

China has confirmed that unilateral visa-free entry for Russian ordinary passport holders is extended through December 31, 2027. The update, published in the Foreign Ministry's visa FAQ in early October 2026, means Russian travelers can keep entering China without a visa for tourism, business, family visits, exchanges and transit — no paperwork beyond a passport and a ticket.

The extension was expected but not certain until the official confirmation. For the wider travel market, it is a signal: China's visa-free experiment keeps getting longer, not shorter, and the policy map keeps expanding.

The Full Visa-Free Map: 50 Countries and a 57-Country Transit Route

Three layers now cover most inbound travelers:

  1. Unilateral visa-free entry (50 countries). Brunei has no expiry date. Russia now runs through end of 2027. The other 48 countries — including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Japan, South Korea, Australia and Malaysia — remain visa-free through December 31, 2026. Stay is up to 30 days, counted from the day after arrival.
  2. 240-hour visa-free transit (57 countries). Since the National Immigration Administration expanded the program on August 20, 2026, citizens of 57 countries can enter through 65 ports across 24 provincial regions without a visa, as long as they are in transit to a third country or region. Kyrgyzstan and Vietnam were the latest additions. The 240 hours can be used for tourism, business, family visits, exchanges and sightseeing while in transit.
  3. Regional and group schemes. Hainan island offers 30-day visa-free entry for 61 countries. Cruise passengers get 15 days across 11 provincial regions. ASEAN tour groups can visit Xishuangbanna and Guilin for six days, and Hong Kong/Macau group itineraries extend into Guangdong and Hainan.

The Numbers Behind the Momentum

Visa-free entry is no longer a niche channel. During the 2026 National Day holiday week, outbound and inbound crossings reached 15.46 million (about 2.21 million per day, up 6.7 percent year on year), with 682,000 entries by foreign nationals (up 5.4 percent). Of those, 505,000 came in visa-free — up 9.2 percent year on year.

The trend runs deeper than one holiday. From January to August 2026, foreign nationals made 61.29 million border crossings, up 19.5 percent, and 23.72 million of those entries were visa-free, up 26.8 percent.

What This Changes for Your Trip

  • Check your nationality first. If your passport is on the 50-country list, a direct flight with a 30-day stay needs no visa application at all. If you are transiting to a third destination, the 240-hour route may cover you even when your country is not on the unilateral list.
  • Count your days correctly. The 30-day window starts the day after arrival, not on the day you land.
  • Match the scheme to your itinerary. Short business trip to Guangzhou? Transit route. A week on Hainan? The regional visa-free program. A 26-day multi-city trip? The unilateral list.
  • Keep the practical prep the same. Visa-free means no application — it does not remove the need for payments, maps and mobile data once you land.

What to do next

Check whether your passport country is on China's unilateral visa-free list, or whether you qualify for the 240-hour transit route; then count your stay from the day after arrival and prepare payments, maps and eSIM before you land.

What may vary

Visa-free eligibility, stay length and expiry dates differ by nationality and scheme; port coverage under the 240-hour transit program varies by region; visa requirements for countries not on the lists may change without notice, so re-check official sources before booking.
