China Travel 2026: Q3 Visa-Free Arrivals Hit 8.99 Million — and Your Dollar Goes Further in China
Q3 visa-free arrivals hit 8.99 million as China's inbound tourism boom accelerates. The numbers, the price gap, and why Shenzhen — 22 days from APEC — is the poster child right now.

Key takeaway
Full report
China's visa-free experiment keeps printing bigger numbers. On Tuesday, the National Immigration Administration reported 8.99 million visa-free entries in the third quarter of 2026 alone — and 192 million cross-border trips between July and September, up 7.9% year on year. With 22 days to the APEC meetings in Shenzhen, the trend line and the price line are converging on one story: China is getting easier to enter and cheaper to enjoy.
What the third-quarter numbers show
Tourism officials in Beijing keep releasing rounds of record figures, and they line up in the same direction. In the first half of 2026, foreign nationals made 22.91 million entries into China, up 20.4% year on year; visa-free entries rose 30.6% to 17.82 million, roughly 78% of the total (NIA, via China Daily, August). The Ministry of Culture and Tourism's blue book expects full-year inbound tourism of 163 million visits in 2026, up 8%. The July State Council plan goes further, targeting 190 million inbound visits and $150 billion in annual inbound spending by 2030. For a traveller, the practical translation is simple: the borders are more open than at any point in the last decade, and the queue data says people are using it.
The price gap, in real numbers
Inbound is booming partly because the same money goes noticeably further. Street food across tier-1 and tier-2 cities runs ¥8-15 (about $1-2) for a jianbing or roujiamo, ¥4-8 at Shaxian snack chain branches, ¥12-25 for a proper main at a local "fly restaurant", and ¥10-25 for small plates at night markets — budget guides repeatedly land on "eat well for under ¥50 ($7) a day". Sit-down comparisons are just as stark: a serious Sichuan banquet in Chengdu runs about ¥300 ($42), while China for Travelers prices an equivalent meal in San Francisco at $180+. On a two-week trip for two, choosing local joints and night markets over mid-range restaurants saves an estimated ¥4,200-8,400 ($590-1,180) in food alone. That is the core of the ChinaPie pitch: the same experience at one-fifth to one-tenth the price.
Why Shenzhen is the poster child right now
Shenzhen is where the two trends physically overlap. APEC's final Senior Officials' Meeting opens November 14, the CEO Summit runs November 17-18 and the 33rd APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting November 18-19 — 22 days from today. South Korea's ambassador in Beijing said on October 22 he expects the summit to deepen bilateral cooperation, calling Shenzhen the frontier of China's high-tech industries. Meanwhile Huaqiangbei, a street under a kilometre long, has become a global "tech-shopping" destination in its own right (Xinhua). October's 12,000-drone light show drove an estimated ¥1.2 billion in same-night tourism consumption, and drone food delivery is already routine. For the traveller, Shenzhen in November is a one-week window where the country's most futuristic city is also its most internationally focused.
What this means for your itinerary
Three practical steps. First, check the visa-free routes before booking: the 240-hour transit policy now covers 57 countries, and several nationalities can enter entirely visa-free. Second, go cashless: a phone with WeChat Pay or Alipay linked to an international card covers stalls, restaurants, metros and taxis — metro gates also accept foreign bank cards by tapping. Third, budget with confidence: ¥300-500 ($42-70) per person per day buys a comfortable mid-range trip including food, transport and sights. One caution: Shenzhen's APEC week (November 14-19) will bring some temporary zone controls and hotel demand, so lock accommodation early and follow official notices from apec2026.cn and Shenzhen Government Online.
APEC and beyond
For the fuller picture, two topic pages on ChinaPie cover this southern-China season: the APEC Shenzhen page (coming soon) for summit context and the Canton Fair page, live now, for the trade-show side of the same trip. ChinaPie does not handle visa, certificate or registration paperwork for anyone — plan entry through official channels. The numbers are out, the prices are set, and the countdown is 22 days: APEC Shenzhen, November 14.
