Pearl River Delta Side Trip: Foshan, Shunde & Zhuhai from Guangzhou (Canton Fair 2026)
Guangzhou is the gateway to the Pearl River Delta, and a free fair day is enough for a real side trip: Foshan by metro, Shunde for food, or Zhuhai by high-speed rail. Here's how each works, including costs and timings.

Key takeaway
During Canton Fair free days, three Pearl River Delta side trips work well: Foshan by Guangfo metro line (Ancestral Temple, Shiwan pottery, about 40–60 minutes), Shunde by high-speed rail from Guangzhou South (UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy since 2014 — double-skin milk, claypot chicken, about 20 minutes by train), and Zhuhai by intercity rail (about 1 hour; Lovers' Road promenade, Zhuhai Chimelong, the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge view). One free day = pick one; two or three days can combine them.

The Pearl River Delta, One Day at a Time
During Canton Fair weeks, most buyers stay in Guangzhou. But the city is also the hub of the Pearl River Delta — Foshan, Shunde and Zhuhai are all reachable in under an hour by metro or high-speed rail, and each is a completely different version of southern China.
This guide covers three realistic day trips, how to do each one, and how to combine them when you have a full free day.
Foshan: Temples and Pottery, by Metro
Foshan is the easiest side trip — the Guangzhou–Foshan metro line (Guangfo Line) runs directly from Guangzhou into Foshan city, and the Foshan Zumiao stop puts you at the heart of the old town.
- Foshan Ancestral Temple (Zumiao). A cluster of halls first built in the Song dynasty, best known for its carved roof ridges and the Huang Feihong and dragon-lion exhibitions. One metro stop from the line; allow 2 hours.
- Shiwan pottery and Nanfeng Ancient Kiln. Shiwan is Foshan's ceramics district; the Nanfeng kiln has been firing for about 500 years and still operates today. Watch potters at work, then browse the workshop shops — a good place for small handmade souvenirs that are not mass-produced.
- Lunch: Foshan shares the Cantonese food tradition, with strong local versions of claypot rice and double-skin milk.
Getting there: Guangfo metro line from Guangzhou, about 40–60 minutes end to end. Fare is a few yuan.
Shunde: The UNESCO Food Capital
Shunde is a district of Foshan and, since 2014, a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy — the only place in Guangdong with that title. For food-focused visitors it is the single best day trip in the delta.
- Daliang old town: morning walk plus the famous double-skin milk shops (Shunde claims to have invented it).
- Local specialties: claypot chicken (sang na gai), freshwater fish dishes, congee hotpot and the famous double-skin milk. Fish dishes here are also traditionally served raw (yusheng) — if you try it, choose a reputable restaurant and follow the hygiene rules.
- Getting there: high-speed rail from Guangzhou South to Shunde station (about 20 minutes) or the metro extension; a taxi from Shunde station to Daliang is 15–20 minutes.
Zhuhai: Coastline and the Bridge
Zhuhai is the delta's seaside city, about 1 hour from Guangzhou South by the Guangzhou–Zhuhai intercity railway.
- Qinglv Road (Lovers' Road): the long seaside promenade with views of the Zhuhai skyline and, on clear days, Macau across the water.
- Zhuhai Chimelong Ocean Kingdom: one of the region's largest marine theme parks — worth it if you travel with family.
- Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge: the sea crossing is visible from the Zhuhai side; tour buses run from the city center.
Zhuhai is best as a full-day trip; a half day covers the promenade and a meal of fresh seafood.
How to Combine Them
- One free day: pick one destination. Foshan (metro) or Shunde (rail) both work as a full day.
- Two free days: Shunde for food, then Foshan for pottery — they sit close together and can share a night.
- Three free days: add Zhuhai, and you have covered three very different faces of the delta.
Practical Notes

- Payments: WeChat Pay and Alipay work across all three cities; carry the payment setup guide with you.
- Timing: last trains back to Guangzhou run around 10–11 p.m.; check the return schedule before you head out.

What to do next
Pick one side trip for each free day and buy intercity rail tickets the day before or at the station; set up WeChat Pay or Alipay before arrival; check the last return train before leaving; use ChinaPie's trip planner (/plan/) to fit Foshan, Shunde or Zhuhai into your fair schedule with realistic timings and budget.
What may vary
Train frequencies and last-train times change with the timetable; temple and kiln opening hours can shift on public holidays; Chimelong ticket prices vary by day; restaurant peak times are longer during fair weeks; weather affects the Zhuhai seaside plan.
