Full report
22 days to APEC Shenzhen — and the city just removed almost every practical friction that used to slow down a China trip.
The APEC week runs from November 14 (Senior Officials' Meeting, Nov 14-15) through the CEO Summit (Nov 17-18) and the 33rd Economic Leaders' Meeting (Nov 18-19). Shenzhen is using the run-up to fix the small things visitors actually hit: border queues, transport payments and phone payments. Three upgrades landed in the past month, and together they make a 240-hour Shenzhen visit feel almost frictionless.
The border crossing now takes five minutes
The rebuilt Huanggang checkpoint — the world's largest single-building land port at 689,700 square metres — opened on October 12 with 24-hour service. It cut the Hong Kong-to-Shenzhen crossing from about 30 minutes to roughly five: one queue, one card check, and a digital-twin platform doing the sorting in the background. There are 134 fast-pass lanes for people and 28 for vehicles, and the port is designed for around 200,000 crossings a day. Land into Hong Kong any hour, cross into Shenzhen before your hotel check-in.
Tap your foreign card and ride the whole Metro
Since September 10, all 432 stations across Shenzhen's 17 Metro lines accept international bank cards at the gate — Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB and UnionPay. Cards issued in more than 200 countries and regions work; tap, gates open, fare is settled automatically. Shenzhen says the upgrade was built specifically for the APEC meetings, and it follows a trial that saw more than 5,000 foreign-card taps in the first week. No ticket machine, no WeChat setup, no cash. This makes Shenzhen only the third city in the Greater Bay Area (after Hong Kong and Guangzhou) where you can tap-to-ride with a foreign card.
240 hours visa-free, 57 countries
The 240-hour visa-free transit policy now covers 57 countries and 65 open ports across 24 provinces. Holders with an onward ticket to a third country or region can spend up to 10 days in the permitted area — which includes Shenzhen — without a separate visa application. For many travellers the practical math is simple: arrive in Hong Kong, cross to Shenzhen for the APEC week and a few days of Huaqiangbei electronics and night markets, then fly out to a third destination. One onward ticket, ten days, no visa paperwork.
One phone runs the whole trip
Shenzhen's stated goal is that a foreign visitor can do everything with one phone: bind a foreign card in WeChat Pay or Alipay, and pay street food, restaurants, taxis and even some museum tickets by scanning. The city's transport bureau has pushed the same logic into the Metro and the airport, with multilingual signage and English help desks at key stations. The pattern that used to scare first-time visitors — cashless China — now works in reverse: bring your bank card, tap and go.
Your 240-hour loop
A practical Shenzhen week looks like this: land in Hong Kong, cross Huanggang in five minutes; tap a foreign card through the Metro to your hotel; spend two days on Huaqiangbei electronics, the Shenzhen Bay promenade and the new Huanggang-adjacent tech districts; two nights on the night-market circuit (Dongmen, Shekou seafood street, Bagua Yilu food street) at roughly one-fifth to one-tenth Western prices; then fly onward within your 240-hour window. APEC week adds 50+ new bus and Metro shuttle lines and 20% more transit capacity, so getting around during the meetings gets easier, not harder.
APEC logistics details come from official sources — apec2026.cn, China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Shenzhen Government Online — and ChinaPie does not handle visa, certificate or registration paperwork, so plan entry via official channels. The countdown is on: 22 days to APEC Shenzhen.
