Drone Food Delivery in Shenzhen: How to Order a Meal From the Sky | China Travel

Shenzhen is the city where food arrives from the sky: Meituan drones now fly 70 routes across six districts, drop meals into pickup cabinets in parks, and deliver in about 8 minutes. Here's how tourists can try it — with an APEC-week angle.

Key takeaway

13 days to APEC. Shenzhen has spent years building the kind of city you'd normally only see in a promo reel — and the newest everyday feature is a yellow drone lowering a meal box into a pickup cabinet in a park.

This isn't an expo stunt. It's a working delivery network, and as a tourist you can actually use it.

What's actually flying in Shenzhen

Meituan started its drone delivery program in 2017 and launched the first regular commercial route here in January 2021. By the end of 2025, the company was running 70 routes across Shenzhen, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hong Kong and Dubai, with more than 780,000 completed deliveries.

Shenzhen remains the biggest single deployment: delivery drones now cover six administrative districts, hit a peak of more than 50,000 orders in a single day, and average about 8.3 minutes from order to delivery. Since September 2025, parts of the network also fly at night.

The scale keeps climbing. In Longhua District alone, Meituan drones logged roughly 220,000 flights in the first eight months of 2026 — already more than the whole of 2025 — and the district's connected network grew to 15 pickup nodes, stretching merchant delivery range from three kilometers to five.

Where you'll spot a delivery drone

Drones land at ground-level pickup cabinets, not at your door. You'll find them in the places tourists actually go:

  • City parks and green spaces — the top spots during holidays; park orders jumped 74% over the May Day break.
  • Office and business plazas, university campuses, libraries and public squares.
  • Port areas — handy around Shenzhen's 24-hour border crossings if you're day-tripping from Hong Kong.

Each cabinet is a small station: the drone hovers overhead, lowers the meal on a tether, and a compartment opens. You scan a code, grab your food, and a second drone is already on the way.

How to order, step by step

  1. Open the Meituan app and switch your location to Shenzhen.
  2. Look for restaurants marked as drone-deliverable (they show a drone icon at checkout).
  3. Pay as usual with the payment method on your phone.
  4. Head to the pickup cabinet — most drops are within a few hundred meters.
  5. Scan the QR code on the cabinet screen, take your meal, and watch the drone fly back.

There's no special registration for foreigners and no separate app to download — it's the same platform locals use for ordinary takeout, which is exactly why it feels so unremarkable once you've done it once.

Why Shenzhen, why now

Shenzhen passed China's first low-altitude economy regulation in early 2024, giving drone logistics a legal framework years before most cities. It helps that the city is also home to DJI, Tencent and Huawei — the hardware and software that make the network run are built down the road.

And the concept is quietly going regional. Meituan's Keeta Drone launched its first Hong Kong route in March 2025, flying a 1.8-kilometer delivery across the sea from Sha Tin to Ma On Shan in five minutes — a trip that takes a ground courier about 40.

The APEC connection

APEC 2026 lands in Shenzhen on November 14. Delegates and journalists arriving early get a working preview of the city's low-altitude economy — the same week Shenzhen's APEC green lanes and 24-hour Huanggang clearance are handling the inflow.
