Full report
12 days to APEC. Shenzhen has spent 46 years building a reputation as China's tech engine — drones, smartphones, supercars. But the city has a second identity most visitors never see: it was named a UNESCO City of Design back in 2008, and its creative heart hides inside a cluster of old factory buildings called OCT-LOFT.
If you're arriving for APEC week or just passing through, this is the Shenzhen that won't show up in your first tech-tour search result — and it costs nothing to enter.
What actually is OCT-LOFT?
OCT-LOFT (华侨城创意文化园) is a creative district built inside the industrial zone of Overseas Chinese Town in Nanshan District. Instead of demolishing the 1980s factory halls, planners kept the red-brick walls, steel trusses, external staircases and even the old loading docks — now converted into café terraces. It opened in 2006, reopened after a major renovation on 14 May 2011, and is now Shenzhen's oldest and best-known example of industrial heritage turned creative space.
Today the park holds 50-plus independent galleries, 30-plus design shops, 25-plus indie cafés and hundreds of design studios. It sits within the OCT national cultural-industry demonstration zone, so the programming never stops: art exhibitions, design shows, craft markets and live music.
Why it's Shenzhen's underrated creative side
Shenzhen's UNESCO designation often surprises people — the city is better known for Shenzhen-made hardware than for Shenzhen-made art. But that's exactly why OCT-LOFT is a differentiator for travellers: it's the place where the factory city shows its softer, weirder, more human side.
Start at Old Heaven Bookstore in the South Zone, one of Shenzhen's most loved independent bookshops. Wander into any of the studio buildings and you'll find working artists, not just retail. Head to B10 Live at the North Zone pavilion, the city's best-known venue for underground and international music.
What's on right now
- The dual exhibition "Guan Zhi Xiang Sheng" (观止相生) at D+ Art Museum runs until 15 November — painting and installation works, still open during APEC prep week.
- OCT-LOFT marked its 20th anniversary in 2026 and served as a China International Cultural Industries Fair venue for the 15th time, under the theme "20 Years of Creative Light" — expect a busy calendar of markets and talks through the year.
- The 13th OCT-LOFT International Jazz Festival wrapped at the end of October with musicians from multiple countries; the park's year-round gig calendar carries on at B10.
- The T-Street Craft Market (T街创意市集) returns regularly with original handmade goods — check the park's schedule before your visit.
How to visit
- Metro: Line 1 to OCT (华侨城) station, then a short walk. Free entry, open daily — livelier from Thursday through Sunday.
- The North Zone is quieter and more industrial, dominated by studios and exhibition spaces; the South Zone is where you'll find the bookshop, cafés and the main retail strip.
- Budget half a day: galleries in the morning, a café lunch, design shops and B10 in the late afternoon.
- Most gallery and studio staff speak basic English, and signage is bilingual — but a translation app helps for the small labels.
The APEC connection
APEC 2026 opens in Shenzhen on 14 November, and the summit is already reshaping the city's calendar — OCT-LOFT sits minutes from the venues and hotels of the Nanshan business district, making it the obvious off-duty stop for delegates and the media crowd.
