Guangdong's AI Travel Card: One Card for Transit, Translation and Booking Across 21 Cities

One card, three jobs

Guangdong province just gave inbound travelers a piece of hardware that does the work of three apps. At the "2026 Inbound Tourism Development & Guangdong Amazing Night" event in Jiangmen on October 20, provincial culture and tourism officials unveiled the Guangdong Inbound Travel AI Card: a Yangchengtong transit card preloaded with ¥30 credit, paired with a "Discover Guangdong with AI" service page that plugs into Trip.com's Trip Genie assistant.

The card was designed as a first-stop solution for visitors landing in the province — the moment you touch down, you can tap onto a metro, ask an AI guide what to eat, and book a hotel, all without switching between apps.

What it actually does

The card does three things in one:

• Ride transit across 21 cities. The card works on buses and metro systems in all 21 prefecture-level cities in Guangdong, including Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Foshan and Dongguan.
• Talk to a 14-language AI assistant. Scan the QR code on the card to open the Discover Guangdong with AI page, which uses Trip.com's Trip Genie to translate menus, translate photos, plan routes and compare hotels in more than 14 languages.
• Book and save. The same page links to Trip.com's overseas platform for hotel, attraction-ticket and flight bookings, and bundles tax-refund (departure tax refund), shopping discounts, Guangdong travel highlights and visa-free policy updates.

For a traveler who does not speak Chinese, that collapses the usual friction points — ordering food, navigating transit, understanding what a ticket means — into one card and one QR code.

Who gets one, and when

The first batch is 10,000 cards, distributed from mid-November 2026. International visitors arriving through Guangzhou Baiyun and Shenzhen Bao'an airports can pick one up free at dedicated arrival zones. Beyond that, the card doubles as a keepsake: a Yangchengtong-based collector's card with the province's tourism branding.

The launch is part of a province-wide push. Guangdong reported inbound tourism up 33% year on year in the first nine months of 2026, according to local media covering the event — growth driven by the same national tailwinds: unilateral visa-free entry for citizens of 50 countries (up to 30 days) and the 240-hour visa-free transit policy for 57 countries, both of which let more visitors arrive without paperwork.

Why this matters for China Travel

Guangdong's AI card is the most visible example yet of a broader shift: China is moving visa convenience beyond the border checkpoint and into the trip itself. Shenzhen started the pattern earlier with its AI City Travel Card (transit credit plus over ¥700 in attraction, hotel and shopping vouchers); now Guangdong has scaled the idea to an entire province.

For young travelers, the practical payoff is a better value equation. A metro ride across Guangzhou costs a few yuan, a 14-language AI translator replaces a hired guide for day-to-day logistics, and departure tax refunds cut the effective price of shopping. The province also happens to be the easiest multi-city loop in China — Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Zhuhai sit a short high-speed train apart, with Hong Kong and Macau a bridge or ferry away.
