China Travel Trend: Kunming's Lakefront Coffee Scene Is a New Must-Try

Kunming's Dianchi coffee scene won a national tourism award on Oct 18 after 6.46M visits in 9 days. The lakefront cafés, cycling routes and cheap cups are still open — here's how to do it.

Key takeaway

A lake that turned into a coffee street

Kunming's Dianchi International Coffee Carnival has quietly become one of China's most-watched tourism events. On October 18, at the 13th China Tourism Industry Development Annual Conference in Shiyan, it was picked from more than 700 applicants as a national model case for "culture + tourism" innovation. The festival itself ran for nine days in early August this year — and drew 6.46 million visits, a number that surprised even the organizers.

What makes it different is where it happens. There is no convention center. The event stretches along the Dianchi Lake greenway, with more than 200 coffee trucks from 52 cities parked by the water, market stalls, music stages, a hot-air balloon over the lake and people on rented bikes riding between cafés.

What travelers can actually do now

The festival wrapped on August 9, but the infrastructure it built stayed. Kunming turned the temporary event into five permanent coffee venues: the Diancui coffee complex, the "Good Island" waterfront café dock at Zhangmeicun Pier, a century-old garden coffee space at Yuyuan, a coffee street at Dianchi Back Bay, and Yunnan ethnic village cafés. The Dianchi greenway itself remains a free public space — rent a shared bike, ride the lakeside loop and stop at coffee trucks along the way.

The city also launched a "Dianfeng Travel" mini-program with five themed routes and more than 100 check-in points linking the greenway, Daguan Park, Xunjin Street and other spots — useful for a two-day lake-and-city loop.

The numbers behind the hype

Yunnan produces about 98 percent of China's coffee, and Kunming is where the industry shows off. This year's carnival ran 300-plus themed events and 200-plus music performances; its coffee-bean auction set a domestic record when a washed Geisha lot sold for 14,000 yuan per kilogram. For visitors, the practical version is simpler: most lakefront cups cost a fraction of what the same drink would run in a global coffee capital.

Practical tips

  1. Go for the greenway: Dianchi Lake's cycling path is flat, shaded and free; a shared bike costs a few yuan per ride.
  2. Visit the permanent venues: the Diancui complex and "Good Island" run cafés, roastery events and weekend markets year-round.
  3. Time it for the light: late afternoon brings the hot-air balloon and sunset views across the water — the classic photo moment.
  4. Use Kunming as a base: with 240-hour visa-free transit available at more than 60 ports, you can land at Changshui Airport, do the lake, then head to Dali or Lijiang by high-speed rail.

Why it matters

Coffee is a global language, and Kunming is now fluent. A lakeside bike ride between cafés, a ¥10 cup of Yunnan-grown coffee and a sunset balloon over the water add up to the kind of low-cost, high-feel travel that makes sense for a China trip — no landmark checklist required.
