Global Influencers and Media Are Flooding Into Shenzhen Ahead of APEC: Tech, Value and the 'City of the Future' — China Travel | ChinaPie

With 12 days to go until APEC opens in Shenzhen on Nov 14, the world's influencers, media and bargain hunters are already here — and the numbers prove it.

Key takeaway

Shenzhen is drawing global influencers, media tours and bargain hunters 12 days before APEC opens on Nov 14 — with 2.42 million inbound foreign visitors in 2024 and 240-hour visa-free transit for 57 countries.

Shenzhen spent years being called a factory town. Twelve days before APEC's Economic Leaders' Meeting opens here on Nov 14, it is busy proving the label wrong — one influencer post at a time.

Influencers arrive, cameras first

In late October, seven Egyptian social media influencers landed at Shekou Cruise Homeport to start a Greater Bay Area tour. Their verdict on Shenzhen: the "City of the Future." They cruised the coastline and filmed the skyline from the water — the same skyline the city has spent 40 years building from a fishing village into a tech hub. A few days later, a five-day media tour wrapped up, bringing international journalists and content creators from APEC economies including the United States, Russia, Australia, South Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. The itinerary read like a tour of Shenzhen's new visitor circuit: INNO100's global innovation flagship store, the Shenzhen InnoX Academy, and Qianhai's startup district. China Daily summed up the mood: "Technology builds a city of wonder."

The price gap that sells itself

The curiosity is not just about gadgets — it is about what they cost. Ahead of the APEC summit, Xinhua followed shoppers in Huaqiangbei, one of the world's largest electronics markets. A Hong Kong-based South African named Janwick Hattingh squeezed in a day trip: a power bank, his MacBook and his daughter's watch repaired, home by late afternoon. "You can find everything," he said. "If you can't find it here, it doesn't exist." Another visitor found a massager that outperformed pricier alternatives back home — for a fraction of the price. That roughly one-fifth-to-one-tenth price gap is a quiet driver of China's travel boom: same service, a fifth of the cost.

A free city tour from the airport

Shenzhen has made the arrival itself an attraction. Transit passengers at Bao'an International Airport can join a free city tour that starts at Shenzhen Bay Talent Park — a shoreline walk with the "Spring Bamboo" skyline in view — before heading back to catch their connection (China Daily, Aug 2026).

The numbers behind the hype

The momentum is measurable. Shenzhen hosted 2.42 million inbound foreign visitors in 2024, up 87.5% year on year, and another 2.20 million in the first three quarters of 2025. Luohu port alone processed more than 50,000 foreign arrivals in July. Under the 240-hour visa-free transit policy, travelers from 57 countries can stay up to 10 days without a visa — enough time to see the tech, eat the food and check the prices yourself.

Why APEC week is the moment

With the theme "Building an Asia-Pacific Community to Prosper Together," APEC puts Shenzhen's openness, innovation and cooperation on a global stage. For travelers, the timing is the deal: the world's cameras will be on the city right when its festival lights, night markets and drone deliveries are at full volume.

The "City of the Future" is not waiting for Nov 14. It is already live — and your 10-day window starts at the airport.
