The policy layer matters just as much. China's 240-hour visa-free transit now covers 57 countries — including the United States, Russia and the UK — across 65 open ports in 24 provincial regions. You need a valid passport and a confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region, and you can stay up to 10 days. During the stay, you're free to travel, do business, visit friends or relatives.

• Register your accommodation within 24 hours of arrival, either at your hotel or the local police station.
• If you need to stay beyond 240 hours or outside the permitted area for an emergency reason, apply in advance to the local exit-entry administration — don't just overstay.
