China Travel's New Credibility: WEF Top-10 Ranking Meets Q3's 24% Visa-Free Jump

The World Economic Forum's 2026 Travel & Tourism Development Index ranks China in the global top 10 — the only developing economy there. Days later, official data showed visa-free entries rising 24.1% in Q3. Together they mark a shift: China Travel is now backed by institutions, media and hard numbers.

The World Economic Forum's 2026 Travel & Tourism Development Index ranks China among the world's top-10 tourism economies — the only developing economy in the group. Days later, official immigration data showed visa-free entries rising another 24.1% in the third quarter. Two pieces of evidence, one conclusion: China Travel has moved from viral trend to institutional credibility.

A top-10 ranking built on infrastructure, not just scenery

In its 2026 Travel & Tourism Development Index, the WEF assessed 110 economies. Nine of the top ten are developed economies. China is the only developing one. The report highlights three strengths: abundant natural and cultural resources, a dense transport network with improving air connectivity, and tourism services plus business-travel conditions that keep improving. For a first-time visitor, that translates into practical outcomes — a city like Shenzhen or Chengdu is reachable by high-speed rail and international flights, with hotel stock and cultural sites layered around it.

What the international press says

US industry outlet Travel & Tourism World has run a series praising China's tourism infrastructure, cultural depth and domestic market scale. Citing National Immigration Administration data, it noted that border authorities processed 61.29 million foreign entries and exits in January-August 2026, up 19.5% year on year, with 23.72 million visa-free entries — 77.6% of the total, up 26.8%. The outlet argues that better connectivity and upgraded infrastructure are the core drivers pushing China into the ranks of world-class destinations, pointing to Shanghai as the flagship example: futuristic skylines alongside classical gardens, historic lanes, food markets and museum districts.

The fresh numbers: Q3's visa-free surge

Released this week, Q3 figures from the National Immigration Administration show the momentum is not slowing. From July to September:

  • Visa-free entries by foreign nationals reached roughly 9 million (about 9.27 million), up 24.1% year on year
  • Total foreign border crossings hit 23.27 million, up 15.6%
  • Visa-free entries accounted for 77.5% of all foreign arrivals
  • China's border authorities processed 192 million entries and exits overall, up 7.9%

That follows a first half in which 22.91 million foreigners entered China, up 20.4%, with visa-free entries at 17.82 million — 77.7% of the total. Travel spending is climbing with the numbers: international visitors spent 263.6 billion yuan (about $39.3 billion) in China from January to July, up 27.8%.

What's changing on the ground

Behind the statistics, the daily travel experience keeps getting easier. Scenic areas are rolling out AI tour assistants with real-time multilingual interaction; mobile payment is increasingly accessible to international visitors; and some attractions now host international shipping points, so travelers can send purchases home without dragging extra bags through security. China currently offers unilateral visa-free entry to citizens of 50 countries for stays up to 30 days, and 240-hour visa-free transit for 57 countries at 65 ports.

From China Travel to China Haul: a trend with receipts

The social-media story has evolved in parallel. During the China Travel phase, visitors filmed scenery; during Chinamaxxing, high-speed trains, night markets and drone deliveries; now China Haul videos show travelers arriving with empty suitcases and leaving with them packed — AI glasses, foldable phones, cultural products and snacks, unboxed for audiences back home. What used to be a handful of souvenirs is now serious shopping, and the trend keeps feeding bookings.

What it means for your trip

For travelers, the practical takeaway is simple: the entry policy, infrastructure and services that institutions now recognize are the same ones you will use on arrival. Check whether your passport qualifies for visa-free entry or 240-hour transit before booking; plan one classic site plus one smaller city for contrast; and expect to pay by phone or foreign card at most major venues.
